Overview
The Overlook is hiring sharp, curious news journalists to cover local meetings, community events, and underreported stories in the mountaintop towns of Windham and Hunter. This is a paid, flexible opportunity ideal for freelancers, early-career reporters, and seasoned journalists who believe in the power of local news.
Do you love showing up to town halls? Are you drawn to the stories no one else is telling? Do you get excited about FOIL requests, deep-dive features, and holding the powerful to account? You might be a great fit. We are looking for reporters to focus primarily on Windham and Hunter.
Responsibilities

Report and write at least two original news stories per week.

Conduct thorough research to ensure accuracy, depth and nuance in all reporting.

Write clear, concise, and compelling articles in accordance with The Overlook’s editorial standards.

Attend town government meetings, public events, press conferences and interviews to gather firsthand information.

Collaborate with editors and fellow reporters to shape story ideas and develop local coverage plans.
Qualifications

Prior experience in journalism or a related field preferred.

Strong research skills and the ability to translate complex topics into accessible, engaging narratives.

Excellent writing, editing, and copy editing skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Compensation

Qualifications

Demonstrated success using social media to grow and engage audiences

Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make strategic recommendations

Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills

Ability to travel across multiple markets in Central and Western New York as needed with a home base in Syracuse, NY
Compensation
$52K to $65K DOE

Overview
A growing regional media company is seeking a motivated, relationship-driven Advertising Sales Representative to help local businesses grow through print, digital, social media, video, newsletter, event, and custom marketing opportunities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a self-starter who enjoys working with business owners, building relationships, creating marketing solutions, and being part of a company that plays an important role in the local community.
The right candidate will be comfortable prospecting, presenting ideas, following up consistently, and closing business. Prior media sales experience is helpful but not required. Experience in outside sales, small business sales, marketing, customer service, or community relations is also valuable.
