James C. Austin, former publisher of the Post-Journal in Jamestown, N.Y. (Ogden Newspapers) recently acquired the Metro Group.  Austin’s company, Community Papers of Western New York (CPWNY) also recently purchased The Angola Pennysaver.

The Metro Group was owned for 14 years by Bernard Bradpiece and Denny Guastaferro.  The group includes the Source group of papers, The Hamburg Sun, Springville Journal, Gowanda News and several specialty publications.

At Ogden’s Leader Herald of Gloversville, N.Y., Steve Herron has been named publisher; previously, he was publisher of the company’s Minot Daily News in North Dakota, a job he’d held since 2010. Herron has spent his entire newspaper career with Ogden, running ad departments at the company’s papers in West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois and at Ohio’s Marietta Times. He replaces Patricia Beck, who retired after 17 years in the job and 34 years in the business. Beck started as a broadcaster in the early 1980s at Albany-market radio stations WMVQ-FM and WKOL-FM. Later, she was with The Recorder of Amsterdam, N.Y. Beck joined Ogden in 1990 at its The Intelligencer of Wheeling, W.Va., as ad director, moving back to upstate New York after six years to run the company’s LeaderHerald.

At GateHouse Media’s The Observer-Dispatch of Utica, N.Y., Terry Cascioli has been named publisher; previously, he was chief revenue officer of Times Publishing Co. of Erie, Pa., a job he’d held for 1¾ years. From 2010-2012, Cascioli was vice president of sales and marketing of the Erie Times-News. He started his career in 1984 as an ad salesman with ADVO Inc. in Columbus. Cascioli replaces Donna Donovan, who retired at the end of March after 23 years as president and publisher of The Observer-Dispatch. Donovan started her career with Gannett in 1974 as a reporter and editor at its The Courier-Dispatch in Somerville, N.J., and became editor in Utica in 1981, a job she held for three years. Donovan moved to the company’s Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1984 as publisher and was publisher of its Burlington Free Press in Vermont from 1986-1991. GateHouse acquired the Utica paper in 2007.
