Recent changes to both the Federal and New York State COBRA law extends continuation of health coverage to 36 months. Group insurance plans that are subject to the insurance laws of New York State must offer continuation of coverage for 36 months even though the Federal COBRA law only requires continuation of coverage to a terminated employee for only 18 months.

The extension of coverage to 36 months was also expanded in New York State to include the mini-COBRA law which covers employees with less than 20 employees.
